In this painting you will see references to Lady Nijo, renowned for her surviving memoir detailing her life as a court lady in Japanese. You will also find "The Old Guitarist" by Pablo Picasso. These two characters represent troubled souls out of balance. The third figure, a man holding a silk screen, representing perception - the filter through which we each see the world, making it either more clouded or more beautiful.
